What you are looking at
A fixed camera watches the water. Its H.264 video is relayed to a cloud GPU, which decodes it continuously, runs a whale-blow detector on the frames, tracks detections across time, and re-encodes the result with boxes drawn on.
A single frame is never enough. A detection has to persist across several frames before it is promoted from CANDIDATE to CONFIRMED, which is what stops a whitecap or a glint from being announced as a whale.
