Overview & Context
Happywhale is the global leader in cetacean photo-identification, using AI-backed image matching to track individual whales via their unique tail flukes. By combining Happywhale’s crowd-sourced biological history database with Leviathan’s real-time shore-based observatories, the partnership builds a complete record of individual whale transits.
Strategic Integration
The integration establishes a synergistic feedback loop: when a Leviathan shore station detects a whale, it issues a real-time presence alert to local whale-watch partners (such as Harbor Breeze Cruises and Newport Coastal Venture). Naturalists and captains use these alerts to safely locate the animals, capture high-quality fluke photographs, and upload them to Happywhale. The confirmed individual ID then feeds back into Leviathan's geospatial database to trace the whale's migration history.
Strategic Collaboration & Pilots
Led by Happywhale founder Ted Cheeseman, a UC Santa Cruz Research Fellow, the collaboration focuses on commercializing combined datasets for maritime operators, scientific groups, and environmental consultants. The partnership also includes co-publishing research that uses Happywhale's photo-ID records to calibrate the detection probability models of Leviathan's shore-based stations.
