Partnership Profile

MBARICross-Modal Acoustic-Visual Validation

Partnering to align surface visual observations with deep-water acoustic telemetry, establishing a scientific baseline for cetacean behavior in Monterey Bay.

Overview & Context

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is Leviathan’s primary scientific validation partner. Under a signed Letter of Intent (LOI), the collaboration establishes Monterey Bay as a premier testbed for shore-based marine mammal observation, combining physical coastal presence with deep-water sensor systems to build a highly credible, cross-validated spatial dataset.

Strategic Integration

The Moss Landing cupola pilot combines a specialized bispectral camera station with real-time surface imagery to detect whale activity, which is cross-referenced with deep-water acoustic streams from the MARS (Monterey Accelerated Research System) cabled hydrophone array. Pairing surface visual data with deep-water acoustics validates detection reliability.

Strategic Collaboration & Pilots

Working alongside John Ryan, PhD (Lead, Ocean Soundscape Team), the partnership focuses on modeling baleen whale behavioral ecology and upwelling-driven feeding habits near the Monterey Submarine Canyon. The joint roadmap includes pursuing conservation funding lanes, such as California Ocean Protection Council (OPC) and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) Vessel Strike Avoidance programs, and evaluating long-term station placement on the decommissioned Moss Landing power plant stacks.
